Catch, Spay/Neuter, Return is the only humane solution
An effective ABC program should spay/neuter 90% of the dogs in that area
Stray Dog Population Control is an urgent need
The Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001 has been enacted under Section 38 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to reduce the dog population by sterilization and minimization of stray dogs with the support and assistance of animal welfare organisations, private individuals and local authorities
Animal Birth Control or ABC in short is a process of sterilization to control the population of stray dogs. They are born unwanted, go through a very harsh life of starvation, dangers, abuse and disease until they die uncared for.
While injury treatment, sheltering sick animals and feeding strays are temporary solutions rendered by animal welfare organisations, the only long term solution is preventing unwanted animals from coming into the world.
The importance of reducing the population of street dogs cannot be understated. Stray dog population is a serious issue and one that needs to be correctly addressed in a humane manner by people who care for animals.
In a big city like Chennai with over 10 million people, animal-animal conflict and animal-human conflict are wide spread and these problems continue every year. The long term humane solution for this is only birth control.
With ABC we end the circle by preventing unwanted animals from coming into the world.
· No new pups will be born which will allow the population to stabilize.
· Sterilized dogs will mean that there will not be fighting or mating during the heat season.
· With no litters to protect, female dogs will not be aggressive.
· Minus the strain of pregnancy, female dogs will remain healthier.
· Sterilized dogs do not get into fights and injure each other during the mating season.
· Vaccination against rabies is part of ABC program and eliminates the danger from the disease
· The existing dog population will be familiar, friendly, healthy and harmless.
