In the initial lockdown of March-April 2020, millions of people stayed at home and thousands of businesses were closed. The street animals have been cut off from their main sources of food, as eateries, restaurants, hotels and butcher shops were closed.
Seeing their pathetic state, we started the feeding in our area – Muthukaadu and Kovalam. We were allowed to travel only within certain limits as we street animal feeders and were questioned each time we stepped out. Despite the challenges of restricted movement and procurement of rice (and other food), we did not want to see dogs and puppies, cats and kittens starve on our own streets and go for days without food. While we cannot feed the thousands of street dogs in Chennai, we started with our area. We just could not ignore them during their time of need.
What started in the March 2020, we have continued to this day providing food for 100+ animals on ECR in the Muthukaadu and Kovalam areas. We have not missed day since then and have provided for them regularly.
Every morning and evening, 100 animals are expecting us to arrive from their designated spots.
Scavenging from dustbins is dangerous, the edible portions that the animal pulls out is most likely rotten poisonous food.
Other discarded materials such as nails, pins, plastics if mixed with something edible, will make its way to the dog/cat’s stomach causing huge issues, sometimes even life threatening
All the scavenging stray dogs we have seen are undernourished and suffer from ill health. Most of them have skin diseases.
If the animal gets familiar with humans, they will associate kindness and help with us. This way they can also be attended to in times of treatment or taking them for animal birth control
The Supreme Court has upheld a previous Delhi High Court order that allowed residents to feed stray dogs in their residential areas. The top court vacated its stay order on a Delhi High Court judgement of 2021 that stated stray dogs have the right to food with citizens also having a right to feed them. The court had ordered a stay on the order on March 4 citing that the order might lead to an increase in stray dog menace.
