Nalam - Shelter

Our Shelter & Rehabilitation Program aims to create a safe, calm, and structured environment for injured, sick, and abandoned dogs and cats.

prithvi animal welfare society

With dedicated dog kennels, a unit for cats, round-the-clock monitoring and care, every animal receives the care they need and deserve. The shelter provides the animals with an open space, where they can interact with humans and fellow furry friends alike. It is designed not only to help animals recover with dignity but also to enjoy their time with kindness. We aim to offer a supportive space where animals can stabilise, regain strength, and move toward adoption or safe return to their communities.

At present, due to capacity constraints, we are take only injured or diseased animals and are not in a position to take in stray dogs/cats or pups/kittens

Uniqueness of our Shelter

At PAWS, our shelters are thoughtfully designed refuge where safety, dignity, and emotional wellbeing come together. Home to 123 cats, this is one of the few shelters of its kind, created with natural material providing good ventilation, shelter from the elements and safety. Every aspect of the shelter reflects our belief that dogs and cats heal best when they feel secure, respected, and loved.

Thoughtful Design Rooted in Feline Nature

Cats are natural climbers and observers, and our shelter design honours this instinct, the cats to enjoy elevation, visual stimulation, and a sense of control over their surroundings. Natural materials are used extensively throughout the space, creating a calmer, warmer environment that reduces stress and supports both physical and emotional recovery.

While the shelter functions as a shared community space, it is carefully segmented to ensure appropriate care for cats with different needs. We maintain dedicated areas that allow us to isolate, treat, and rehabilitate without compromising the wellbeing of the larger population.

  • Safe and comfortable housing for 123 cats

  • Separate isolation sections for new intakes or infectious cases

  • Treatment cages for cats requiring close medical monitoring

  • Dedicated accommodation where paraplegic cats adapt, thrive, and regain confidence

Every cat at PAWS receives consistent, nutritious food suited to their health condition and age. Clean water, hygiene, and timely medical attention are treated as fundamentals, not privileges. Beyond routine care, our team spends time observing behaviour, building trust, and responding to subtle changes that often signal discomfort or illness in cats.

What truly defines our cat shelter is the atmosphere of tenderness and patience. Many of our cats come from trauma—abandonment, injury, neglect, or cruelty. Here, they are met with quiet voices, gentle handling, and endless TLC. Paraplegic cats, in particular, show remarkable resilience in this environment, forming bonds, adapting beautifully, and rediscovering joy.

This shelter stands as a living reminder that when cats are given safety, respect, and compassion, they do far more than survive—they heal, trust, and flourish.

The PAWS dog shelter is designed first and foremost around comfort, safety, and dignity for rescued and rehabilitating dogs. It is a calm, grounded space that acknowledges the realities of our climate while responding sensitively to the physical and emotional needs of dogs who have often known neglect, injury, or abandonment. Here, dogs are not merely housed—they are given the time and environment needed to heal.

Unlike multi-level structures, our dog shelter is intentionally designed at ground level to ensure ease of movement, reduce injury risk, and accommodate dogs of all ages and physical conditions. The layout prioritises thermal comfort and weather resilience, making the shelter suitable for year-round care in challenging conditions.

The structure is designed to remain cool during extreme summer heat through adequate ventilation, shaded areas, and materials that minimise heat retention. During the monsoon, the shelter remains dry, secure, and protected, with proper drainage and covered resting areas to prevent dampness, flooding, and related health issues.

The shelter layout allows us to manage dogs responsibly based on health, temperament, and recovery stage. Dogs are given enough space to rest, move, and observe their surroundings without constant stress or overcrowding.

  • Ground-level design for safety and accessibility

  • Well-ventilated kennels to reduce heat stress

  • Covered and weatherproof areas for protection during rains

  • Segregated spaces for dogs requiring medical care or quiet recovery

  • Secure enclosures that prevent injury and escape while allowing visibility and airflow

Dogs at PAWS receive regular, wholesome meals appropriate to their health needs, along with constant access to clean drinking water. Hygiene is maintained rigorously to prevent disease and discomfort, particularly in hot and humid conditions. Our caregivers and veterinary team monitor behaviour, appetite, mobility, and wound healing daily, ensuring that concerns are addressed early and compassionately.

Many dogs arrive at the shelter frightened, defensive, or withdrawn after prolonged hardship. What transforms them is not just medical treatment, but consistency, patience, and kindness. Our team spends time with each dog—talking, sitting quietly, offering reassurance, and rebuilding trust at the animal’s pace. Over time, anxious dogs soften, injured dogs regain strength, and abandoned dogs learn that they are safe again.

Experience the fulfillment of donating towards the feeding these animals. In memoriam of donations for cherishing memories loved ones, pets are most welcome.
